We have all heard the health benefits of Omega 3’s specifically EPA and DHA found in fish oil, however, there is a 3rd Linolenic acid or ALA and the best source of it is found in flaxseeds. Since your body cannot make ALA on its own, you must get it through your diet. A certain percentage is converted in the body from the fatty acids found in fish but ALA has some excellent health benefits including lowering cholesterol, brain and eye function. 

The secret is in the lignans. They help women go through menopause naturally because the lignans attach themselves to excess estrogen receptor sites and help eliminate them, preventing the side effects of estrogen dominance. The side effects of estrogen dominance include:

  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Growing hair where you don’t want it
  • Losing hair where you do want it 
  • Simply do not feel yourself 

There is a growing amount of research pointing to the anti-cancer benefits of lignans which help to prevent breast cancer in pre-menopausal women. The flaxseed oil contains ALA which is an essential nutrient for every cell in the body plus it gives you energy that lasts for hours. This powerful nutrient also fuels the brain by improving mental clarity and can actually suppress the appetite so it is a great way to lose weight. 

Flaxseed oil can be used in making salad dressings or you can mix it with some olive oil and herbs for a fabulous spread. When it comes to eating the actual flaxseeds, make sure they are ground because otherwise, it will be impossible for the body to digest them whole. 

Add them to your morning smoothie or sprinkle ground flaxseed on some Greek yogurt or on your dinner salad. It is the best way to increase fiber in your diet that is delicious too. Enjoy in the best of health.
